The film A Separation won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as a whole tranche of film prizes for best actress, best actor and best film. While the film is set in contemporary Iran, the issues the film deals with will resonate with a variety of cultures and families in Dubai, all of whom sooner or later have to think about caring for elderly relatives and balancing other commitments at the same time.
The movie features the Director Ashgar Farhadi’s own daughter playing Terme, an 11 year old girl who is caught between warring parents. There are a number of key scenes that take place in Iran’s courts but ultimately the Director lets you the audience be the judge of what’s right and what’s not.
Believable characters, moving story lines and a fresh contemporary setting make this compelling mystery movie a must see. I saw it at a special screening at Knowledge Village where the main actress Sarah Bayet and Negar Eskandarfar the producer took part in a discussion after the screening.
The event was organized by Documentary Voices, an organization that seeks to develop and empower filmmakers via film production courses, screenings, discussion panels and workshops. www.documentaryvoices.com
The film was supported by the Dubai International Film Festival and the screening was organised by mahshid.zamani@caspianevent.com

Mashid from Caspian Events told me that they don’t as yet have an exact date the film will be shown in the UAE generally. The distributor is Teleview. But the DVD is available from Virgin Megastore.
Also there is a mini Iranian film festival in September and we’ll let you know more about that nearer the time.
