I found it really difficult to set up my blog in the first place so thought all that I've learnt along the way connected to blogging, social media and controlling my iMac could be put here into bitesized video chunks for you to understand as well. It was hard to find any clear, concise, to the point videos for many simple things I wanted to do, like move pictures from a DSLR to a file or even take a screen shot and then FIND it on my iMac! CHOOSING A HOSTING SERVICE FOR YOUR BLOG

It’s important to go about choosing a reliable and reputable hosting service for your blog 

So you’ve always wanted to start a blog, so much to think about. Don’t worry, help is here! This piece of advice informs you what to look for when choosing a hosting service for your blog.This is the second in a series of posts to ensure your blog is a success. We’re not talking about content, pictures, seo, web design or any of that today. It’s about making sure your blog is visible on the world wide web. For that you need a reliable web hosting service. But how do you go about choosing a hosting service for your blog?

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web.

You write your content, publish your posts and then share them out but it’s the web hosting service that gives you your section of space on the world wide web. If the web hosting service’s servers are down perhaps because of maintenance or a fault, then your site won’t be visible to anyone and that’s useless, frustrating and also embarrassing if you’re with a potential client showing them your site.

DoinDubai researched a few different web hosting companies before deciding to sign up with Blue Host. We’ve been very happy with their service so far and would recommend them. We’ve used them for over 4 years now without any problems. But whichever hosting company you decide to go with, bear these points in mind.

Things to look for when choosing a hosting service for your blog or website

  • How much are they charging you – do they have monthly or yearly deals that work out cheaper? BlueHost are currently charging us USD3.95 a month for hosting.
  • Do they offer a site Back Up service in case of disaster? That’s very important and will give you peace of mind. This may cost a bit extra but it’s worth it.
  • Can you set up your own email service via the host? So we have [email protected] for instance
  • Do they offer an online support service? This is essential. We’ve used the BlueHost online support a few times now and have managed to get through quickly and have been happy with responses to our questions.
  • Crucially is the support available 24/ 7? We’re in Dubai, so 3 hours + or – time zone is useless to us. We need support when we ask for it whatever the time of day.
  • Is there a particular type of website your hosting company deals with a lot ? Blue Host is the number 1 recommended company for wordpress so as we are a wordpress blog it made sense for us to sign up with them.
  • Is there a Try before you Buy option where you can get your money back if you’re not happy after a certain period?

There are other things you can look for, but these are the main ones.

How to Take a Screen Shot on an iMac and then save in a file for later use

How to Take a Screen Shot with your iMac

The video explains it but the 3 keys you need are COMMAND, SHIFT AND NUMBER 3. That’s it. The screen shot, ie a pic of your screen will be saved on your DESKTOP. Go to your Desktop via your finder, click on the screen shot and then save it in a file, ideally under pictures. If you don’t you’ll end up with a very messy desktop! Like mine, as I am always taking screen shots but not too good at filing them immediately. If you need to understand more then leave me a comment and I’ll reply.

So when I had to find the pictures from Pantry Cafe to write the post, it was easy! There will be a video on how to easily delete pictures from your camera using the iMac, it certainly wasn’t an obvious how to for me!

How to move pics from dslr camera to an iMac

It’s so useful to move your pictures from a dslr camera to your iMac. You can look at them much more easily, make slide shows and albums and even edit them in graphics packages and turn them into something completely different. But how do you move them across? I am assuming you know how to connect your camera to your iMac via a small cable. Then the rest is on the video below. It also helpfully shows you how to make a folder for these pictures you move across so you can find them easily again on your computer.

So I can easily find my pictures on my iMac for Pantry Cafe. Of course you also have to remove your pictures from your camera to make more room on your memory, but what’s the best way to do that? So many people are now joining Twitter, great for keeping up to date with all the things that interest you but also for following the latest news and current affairs all over the world. Your favourite products and services probably have twitter accounts so again you can contact them so easily via twitter and often get a really quick response.
