LIVING:
Buying or selling a second hand car in Dubai – You never really know what’s involved in a process until you go through it. Last week the call came through, via Dubizzle, so I found out first hand.
The cash price was agreed when the buyer examined the car and it was established that the tyres would probably need to be replaced at his expense if they “failed” the test. I was to meet him the next morning at Tesjeel (which means registration) in Al Barsha, behind the gold and diamond park.
He was a good guy, he drove the car to the testing section and filled in some preliminary paper work while I waited in the café adjacent to the registration administration section.
He filled in the paper work and the subsequent paper work in Arabic.
There are of course English versions of the forms as well. He also agreed to take the car to have the tyres replaced as they failed, so far so easy.
The car was then re-presented for it’s roadworthy test and this time it passed. We thought that was it, but apparently a DEWA bill of the buyer was also required.
These are documents you will need (as of November 2013)
- passport copies
- driving licenses
- the gold coloured car registration cards of both parties
I also made sure I had an original power of attorney document as I was selling the car on behalf of my husband who was out of Dubai at the time. You’ll need a copy of this for them to put in their file. (The nearest photocopier is in the petrol station in the same complex)
It is at this stage that any outstanding fines (we had none) need to be paid by the seller. Check this before you go to avoid any surprises.
I got my cash, don’t forget to remove your Salik sticker as well and don’t at this point be tempted to spend your lolly at the Gold and Diamond park next door !
Doesn’t sound too bad but it took the best part of three hours, that’s excluding changing the tyres and presenting the car for it’s 2nd roadworthiness test.
