ITALIAN FOOD AT THE SHERATON

Dubai has so many “Destination” restaurants, places frequented because of their design, their location, the dining room itself, all of which try and impress diners with unusual (read dark) lighting schemes, open plan glassed in kitchens and jaw dropping art.  But sometimes you need to eat at a place where you feel truly cared for, in a setting that is soft, comforting and cozy without being anything like a café. Italian food at the Sheraton is served at Luigis and it certainly fits the bill.

We had a family dinner there last Friday evening and felt right at home as soon as we walked in, there is something just right about the proportions of the restaurant with it’s comfortable sized, gentle dining chairs and intimate, warm atmosphere that made us wind down and relax. Service is friendly, personal and helpful, not overbearing but always accessible.

I left the choice of aperitif to our barman and was so pleasantly surprised by the result, a refreshingly grown up mix of Campari and Prosecco, very Italian and too easy to drink.

Food was equally good, pasta al dente, and salads of mozzarella and tomato were delicious. Pizza bases sometimes are doughy and underdone, not at Luigis, crisp and stonebaked. Fresh basil is used in abundance in their pesto sauce and the fish soup tasted fresh and wholesome. The food here reminded me of good Italian trattoria food, no more, no less. Portions are generous, don’t be tempted to over order, but do something very un Italian and order a cappuccino after dinner, great coffee and crunchy, nutty amaretti biscuits bursting with pistachios. The children opted for tiramisu, I thought the fruit puree of berries wasn’t necessary and this would have been tastier if it was a little lighter. So go on Valentines day or any day you need to feel loved.
