Thanks Monica at Xiao Fei Yang, International City, Dubai.
Where is Little Fat Sheep ?
This family restaurant is located in the China Cluster behind Dragon Mart off Hata Road in International City. It opens for lunch around 12pm and serves food all day till around 10pm at night. A huge lunch for 2 cost Dhs 80 per (costs in 2013) head drinking water or Green Tea. It’s better to go with four people if you can, we had lots left over from our meal for 2 people.

It’s Chinese New Year on the 23rd of January, bring in the Year of the Dragon (Year of the Goat in 2015 and New Year is on 19th February) with a meal at the fabulously authentic (all staff speak Mandarin) family restaurant Xiao Fei Yang or Little Fat Sheep near Dubai’s Dragon Mart.
What do you eat at Little Fat Sheep?
A friend and I shared a hot pot style lunch there and while this is a no frills restaurant, it is spacious, very clean and serves yummy food. You choose your broth base first, we selected fresh herbs based broth which has a chicken stock base floating with plump garlic, slices of fresh ginger, a few mint leaves and a generous handful of goji berries.
Try the base stock at this point, it comes to you in a huge bowl for sharing that sits neatly on your electric hotplate embedded in your table and you control the level of simmer. Next order the ingredients you’d like to add, the sky’s the limit, we chose shrimp, Chinese cabbage, spinach, tofu and mixed mushrooms, all of which come to your table prepared and ready to pop in your hot pot. Start with the Chinese cabbage, add the mushrooms last as they cook really fast. You can also have very thinly sliced lamb or beef as well.
Then for your dip preparation, at a separate counter you can concoct your own dipping sauce to have with ingredients from your hot pot. I chose chilli oil, minced garlic, chives, coriander and tahini paste Chinese style from the range of options. And finally you’re ready to eat and chat and eat and chat and eat some more !
There are a few Chinese hot pot style restaurants in Dubai now, one in the Marina near the Grand Habtoor hotel and one in Deira.
Thanks Monica.
