RETRO DUBAI DINING It's really cool.
A bit of Retro Dubai Dining for you this month, Indian style. We're eating at Mooombai and Co and loving Little Miss India, do you know where she lives? Also a gorgeous al fresco spot by the beach with a delicious deal attached. But if you want to do something really cool, then head out to La Mer and feast on more retro art. But what can you eat at La Mer? Plus gorge on some unlimited Oriental, choose Thai or Chinese. LISTEN TO THE PODCAST below and the sound bites to get all the foodie details...

PIZZA ON THE PALM
We really felt like we were on holiday here, along side the water with plants and rocks, and no buildings in front of us other than a private island!
Where am I eating my pizza? It’s on the beautiful terrace at Il Faro part of the Azure Residences on the Palm Jumeirah. Good pizza and parmigiana melanzane in a fabulous licenced setting.
There is a Ladies Night deal every Tuesday for unlimited bubbles and pizza for AED 150. I liked it there during the day though. They also have apperitvo hour earlier on in the evening every day when drinks are also on offer.
BOOM SHAK A LAK AT THE H HOTEL
A newish, retro style Indian cafe, this time on the ground floor of the H hotel on Sheikh Zayed road. Expect to see records and old style cassettes and listen to funky remixes of some classic Hindi tracks.
We're back in 1970s Mumbai, which would have been called Bombay then..The food at Moombai and Co? Well it's based on Parsi, Irani style Indian cafes.
I really liked the street food bhel puri served in paper cones, like you'd get on Chowpatti beach. They also have a terrace for outside seating, a great place for snacks and drinks every evening. About AED 28 for a good serving of Bhel Puri.
WHERE DOES LITTLE MISS INDIA LIVE
She lives on the Palm Jumeirah at the Fairmont hotel and is well worth getting acquainted with!
We went to the grand opening and really liked all our food.. Not a molecular morsel in sight, which suits me very well.. Expect well cooked, mainly Northern Indian style food traditionally presented. But on top of the very home style food, we LOVED the interiors. It was like sitting in someone's quite elegant, Indian living room.
This is a brand new concept not a branch from an existing outlet. We liked the very retro style truck in the terrace. It has a great outdoor area and is reasonably priced for a restaurant in this location. I'm going back, but do note it's only open for dinner at the moment, not lunch. Say Namaste to Little Miss Indian from DoinDubai! Around AED 75 for the chicken tikka and seekh kebabs dishes, AED 95 for a vegetarian thali and AED 50 for some tadka daal. So for me that's pop in regularly prices!
PICK A PLACE FROM A SEASIDE SELECTION
Do you know where there is a whole selection of restaurants by the sea? No we're not at Cub Vista Mare, but at a similar sounding place..
We're at La Mer in Jumeirah 1, the newest development from Meraas, you will eventually be able to choose from 130 restaurants along 2 distinct bits of beach.
Go along and just eat what you feel like, but do beware service at least on a week end may be slow. We had a Turkish breakfast at a place called Zou Zou and ate grilled halloumi and Arabic bread. Check out the detailed post on La Mer here.
BACK TO THE BEACH BUT THIS TIME FOR SOME HOME MADE BURRATA FROM BIANCA
We're actually eating home made burrata at the Box Park branch of Bianca Mozzarella and Co, but they have a big, brand new outlet on The Beach in JBR Well priced Italian food by the sea.
Very creamy, very runny burratta made right here in the UAE but not with pasteurised milk so the shelf life is really short and therefore that guarantees freshness all round.
Some things are imported, like the new pizza oven from Napoli, so I recommend trying it.. interestingly Francesco, listen to him here, was also behind the opening of Matto and knows the Nurano pasta that we first saw at Quattro Passi at the Viceroy. Expect to pay AED 40 and 65 for a good quality pizza! Wish it was nearer me!
BRAND NEW CHINESE IN BUSINESS BAY
Welcome to Long Teng Seafood in Ubora Towers in Business Bay. It's always reassuring to see Chinese people in a Chinese restaurant! Top Notch food in a very classy setting, with a roof terrace too.
Try the bbq style okra and asparagus, very new dishes for me on a Chinese menu. And another dim sum deal, all you can eat including tea and water for AED 128 on a Friday.. but not on the roof top, lower floors of the restaurant. Not licensed yet, but a very good standard of Chinese food..
I would go back for the dim sum deal and a good place for visitors if you want to show them a mini Dubai Aquarium! This would be a great place to book a room for a Christmas Party. A portion of prawn and chive dim sum costs AED 32 while the asparagus cheung fun costs AED 32
A SPICY DIM SUM DEAL
It's not quite retro but it's a well established Chinese with a brand new dim sum deal!
Friday or Saturday brunch from 12 to 3.15 pm, eat as much dim sum as you like, wash it down with Chinese tea and water. All in a really classy setting in DIFC, we're at Royal China. Prawn and Chive's one of my favourites, do you have any favourite dim sums?
Try this deal with one friend for a quiet catch up, or this would great for a pre festive group lunch as there wouldn't be any fights about the bill! Sweet dim sums included..
ANOTHER ALL YOU CAN EAT DEAL BUT HURRY JUST TILL END OF NOVEMBER
Time for Thai! It's getting cooler for us Dubaians, so maybe now's the best time for some Spicy Thai curries? Again, this place could be considered Retro Dubai Dining, but it wouldn't be that trendy retro, it's just dated retro in terms of decor! Nothing dated about the food though!
We loved our Thai fish cakes, chicken in a pandan leaf and hot and spicy green Thai curries.
The chef Narumol has actually cooked for the Thai royal household.
Have a listen to where Top Thai chefs eat on their day off!
We're eating at Benjarong at the Dusit Dubai in Sheikh Zayed road. This delicious November deal costs AED 195.00
But if you're thinking ahead to Foodie Gifts, then you could give someone a Thai cooking lesson with lunch included for AED 240 3 till 5pm. Next one is this Saturday 25th November.
