The only city that has an international airport in Bhutan at the moment is PARO. It’s not the capital though, that’s Thimpu about a 90 minute drive away.
You can fly to Paro on direct flights from cities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Singapore and recently also from Dubai in the UAE!
Their national carrier is Druk Air and they have just invested in some new planes. While distances are not long in Bhutan km wise, roads often traverse mountain passes, so you could consider the helicopter service also operated by Druk Air.
You have to look carefully at the schedule for the time of year you want to fly as it tends to change seasonally depending on your destinations. There is also a helicopter service to take you to cities in Bhutan.
We chose to fly direct to Paro on the new Druk Air flight from Dubai.
The flight leaves from Terminal 1 at Dubai airport and at the moment operates twice a week, the departure is a very early 4.00am!
Flight time is roughly four hours and you get to Paro at their local time 10.30am It’s 2.5 hours ahead of Dubai.
Flying direct is super convenient, please note that the flight back to Dubai is still direct but a bit longer at 5.5 hours. It’s a morning flight so you land by lunchtime, again that’s very convenient.
