Two of the main talking points in local (and international) news recently have been the tremors felt by us in Dubai as a result of the 2 earthquakes in Iran on the 9th and 16th of April – apparently Dubai has 909 high rise buildings with 387 buildings that are over 99 meters high, in fact many people felt their buildings sway and evacuated their offices and a well known school closed as it was afraid of cracks. And in the business world – the extraordinary and difficult to fathom fluctuating gold price.
I know friends of mine now regularly buy pieces of jewellery (perhaps easier to do with our tax free salaries and definitely safer to wear on a daily basis here than in London) and others who have even started their own art collections buying at auction or from some of the many excellent galleries in the region. Recently I attended Christies opening reception of it’s Dubai sales at a reception in Emirates Towers. The event showcased contemporary works of art by Arab, Iranian and Turkish artists, and guide prices ranged from 5000 to well over 100, 000 US dollars. I wasn’t tempted to bid at these prices but there were people who did. I have though bought more affordable art from all over the world but haven’t really up to now thought about insuring it. Time to think again.
Christies in conjunction with Zurich
One of the main sponsors of the Christies event was the international and highly respected Zurich insurance group with whom we have recently taken out a policy for home contents insurance that includes coverage for jewellery and paintings as well as the ususal things connected to home contents. The process was quick and easy and the cover we were offered was comprehensive, moreover the process of claiming seems to be straightforward. Apparently they even cover things like an earthquake rocking villas in the Arabian Ranches but more importantly I know I’m covered just in case I lost one of those precious gold or diamond ear rings, whatever the gold price is doing. Enough said !
Zurich Insurance has very kindly offered DoinDubai subscribers a voucher that entitles them to a generous 10 % off their insurance premium. If you’d like to take up this voucher then just email me at [email protected] or leave me a comment and I’ll send it through.
Remember DoinDubai doesn’t recommend anything it wouldn’t do itself. Meanwhile if anyone has a good theory about why the gold price is behaving as it is, I’d love to hear from you and will publish the best theory! Did you buy some gold baubles or bricks when gold was at a low point last week ? Would love to know…
Thankyou Monica.
