A quick, but useful set of Travel News Items that you should know about if you’re about to travel home or away….
Travel News Item 1ย Don’t show them your Boarding Card
Apparently you don’t need to show cashiers your boarding pass when you purchase something from Duty Free. It enables the retailer to often claim back a hefty saving as you are taking the goods out of the country but the savings are not passed on to you. Therefore the price you pay is higher than it should be. There seems to be an en masse revolt occurring at Heathrow, but I didn’t experience this when I flew from London on Sunday 9th August.
Travel News Item 2ย Pack an extra zip lock bag
Some airports have begun charging for those plastic bags you need to put your liquids, medicines and creams in, so keep a couple of zip locks handy in your travel bag.
Travel News Item 3: ย Save taxi money, book a Careem in Dubai
If you’re returning to Dubai then Careem (the private, online taxi firm) is offering a whopping 20 % off your ride home if you use the promo code FLYBACK, till the end of September so far.ย
Travel News Item 4: ย Splash out on the most hydrating cream around
Drink at least a litre of water on your flight to stay hydrated. But if you happen to be in London or New York then splash out on a tube of cream by Malin and Goetz and feel the difference. It was designed specifically to help combat dehydrated skin due to flying. Available at Liberty’s in London. NOT AVAILABLE as yet in Dubai and of course effects are lessened if you consume large quantities of alcohol.
Travel News Item 5: ย You may be asked to put that gin down
Some airlines now announce that passengers should not be offended if they decide to stop serving individuals who they believe have had too much to drink. Sensible of course but I’ve never heard it announced before.
Travel News Item 6: ย Sort out your Kenyan visas
If you are going to Kenya then from the 1st of September you can no longer get a visa on arrival, you will need to apply on line. It’s still a good idea to download the visa forms, print them out and fill them up at home, that way you can go to the front of the queue when you get to Nairobi.ย (Till September 1st)
Travel News Item 7: How much does your baby weigh?
Some airlines are also asking how much your infant weighs before they are allowed in the bassinets. Apparently there is a weight restriction on how safely the cots can carry a certain weight. If your baby looks like they may be breaching the weight limit then you may have to carry them on your lap, for the entire flight, even if they are asleep!
Travel News Item 8: Colour Co ordinated locks are a really good idea
A really useful item from Superdrug in London are their colour co ordinated locks, blue key opens the blue lock, so no fumbling around for which key to which lock. Really helpful if they did them in a pack of multi coloured locks. And if you buy one for 4 pounds, you get the second pack for free.
